Zimbabwe's opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai urged the international community to reject the results of Friday's run-off election in which President Robert Mugabe is the sole candidate.
"Anyone who recognizes the result of this election is denying the will of the Zimbabwean people and standing in the way of a transition that will deliver stability and prosperity not just to the country, but to the region," Tsvangirai told reporters. "I am heartened by the fact that so many African leaders are now working with the MDC towards finding a lasting, peaceful solution to the Zimbabwean crisis," added the Movement for Democratic Change leader who won the first round but boycotted the run-off after attacks on his supporters. "These African leaders realise that it is essential that Zimbabwe joins the new Africa by joining the family of African nations where the people's right to choose their leaders and live lives free of fear and oppression is of paramount importance." Tsvangirai said he could not see "any role" in the future for South African President Thabo Mbeki, who has been mediating between Zimbabwe's opposition and ruling party, if he recognised victory for his old ally Mugabe. "How can you recognise this kind of sham?" "President Mugabe is intimidating African leaders, intimidating the world, it's part of his culture of denying his mistakes," he added. "He cannot continue intimidating the people of Zimbabwe." (AFP) |
