ImageGreat Ethiopian Run will stage a half-marathon race in Adama tomorrow, publicizing messages about ‘Clean & Green’ in conjunction with an ongoing campaign by the Adama City Government. Coming just three weeks before the annual Abebe Bekila Marathon in Addis Ababa, the race is likely to attract a number of Ethiopia’s top young club runners who will be competing for cash prizes starting from 8000 birr each for the men’s and women’s individual winners. In addition to the half-marathon race, a 7km mass run will take place, as well as a shorter race over 1200m for children aged under 11.

The event is the 40th competition staged by Great Ethiopian Run and this is the first time in its seven-year history that it is staging a half-marathon race. The course runs along some of the new wide asphalt roads in the town and with its lower elevation compared to Addis Ababa the venue is more conducive to fast times.

‘Clean & Green’ messages focus on a new government law (Proclamation 513) which bans the manufacture and import of plastic bags less than 0.3mm in thickness. A complete ban on the use of plastic bags has been introduced in a few other African countries but has not yet been enforced in Ethiopia. All participants in Sunday’s run will receive a bag made of natural fibre in addition to their souvenir race T-shirt. Additionally, Great Ethiopian Run is donating a number of rubbish bins to the Adama City Government, the first-ever of their kind for the town.

Around 3000 participants are expected at Sunday’s event, the 3rd time in three years that Great Ethiopian Run will be staging a mass-participation race in Adama.
